Recent surveys carried out have suggested that almost half the gardens in the UK have bird tables or bird feeders and it is estimated that a staggering £150 million each year in the UK, is spent on bird food of one sort or another!! It is becoming a regular occurrence to find rat problems being caused by food that is being placed or used incorrectly for feeding birds or other wildlife. Surveys carried out by local councils in the past revealed that more than three quarters reported that bird feeding was increasing rat numbers. Rats and mice are born to be scavengers and will look for food...

Autumn is with us, with winter just around the corner. We all look forward to being cosy and warm in our homes – thank goodness for central heating! If Halloween and Bonfire Night provide excitement then think of these facts: • There are over one million species of different insects. • Cat fleas can drink up to 15 times its own body weight in blood. • A fleas’ egg can lay dormant for up to 12 months. • A cockroach can live for weeks without food and water and can hold their breath for up to 40 minutes. • There are 5000 species of mammals including 2000 species of rodents. • The teeth...

As Christmas edges nearer and excitement grows it is time to go up in the loft and dust off the boxes with the decorations inside and retrieve the plastic tree and ornaments from where they had been placed last January. BEWARE. It has probably been almost a year since the boxes etc were carefully repacked and replaced in the loft and that is more than enough time for other interested parties to move in! As the temperatures gradually decrease outside it still remains warm and dry inside in the loft which makes it a perfect place to raise a family. We are all guilty of storing items in the...

RAT IN MY KITCHEN!

The famous song by UB40 said it all – “There’s a rat in my kitchen what am I gonna do?” Rats can gain access not only to a kitchen, but a whole property very easily and they only need a hole of 6mm to do it. Being masters of adaptation, the rat can quickly take advantage of any building defects both above and below ground level to enter properties and will infest any part of a building using drains, pipework, floor voids and cavities to move around unseen, eventually gaining access to loft spaces. Food is the main prize of any scouting mission and rats are omnivorous, meaning they will...

How often do we really read the small print and fully understand the consequences? With all the austerity measures currently being used to save money, insurance is one of the many areas we look to save money on and the results could end up costing thousands of pounds. Household insurance policies that actually cover rodent damage in their wording are far and few between. Many have the following phrases included: “We will not cover: damage caused by wear and tear, settlement and shrinkage, vermin, insects, fungus, weather conditions, or any damage which happens gradually.” Or: “We will not...

There are well over 7 million domestic cats in Britain and possibly over 10 million dogs! Domestic cats and dogs are a very common sight nowadays and most families own at least one or the other and in most cases they have a free run of the properties they live in, being able to enter or leave as they wish, by using a cat or dog flap. With this method, it is common practice to leave food and water down so the pet can come and go and eat at will. Just as domestic pets quickly grasp the situation, so do wild animals that frequent our gardens and properties. Mice and rats can smell food from...
